Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. 1938 edition of the legendary Surrealist journal. MINOTAURE is an incredibly special mixture of criticism, art and literary analysis. Put together by many of the great names of that epoch - Breton, Dali, Picasso, to name some - it exists as a testament to the precepts of Surrealism. Not merely a venue for discussing art, MINOTAURE was a place where Surrealists engaged in discourse with one another, prising out theory and expressing the deeper concerns of a movement. Of particular interest in this edition is George Pudelko's essay upon Piero di Cosimo, who is presented as a forerunner of the movement, and early works by Paul Rehct. These editions are delicate museum objects. The binding has worn loose, although the images within remain remarkably clear.

Art by Hans Bellmer, Anduve Beaudin, Balthus. Textos de Tériade, Roger Callois, Henri Michaux, Paul Eluard, Maurice Raylan (Bores), Maurice Heine, , André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Herbert Reed.Minotaure, published in Paris between 1933?39, was a Surrealist-oriented publication founded by Albert Skira with editors André Breton and Pierre Mabille. Prior to serving as a Minotaure editor, Breton lent his support by publishing the full-page advertisement reproduced to the right, which announced the first issue of the new publication in the final issue of Le Surréalisme au service de la revolution.Minotaure, although not exclusively Surrealist in orientation, was faithful to the Surrealist spirit. The periodical's appeal for the mainstream art public gained wider recognition for the movement, especially with its feature articles on architecture, not commonly found in other Surrealist publications. The goal of Minotaure was to introduce Surrealism to a new generation of theorists and artists, but with the onset of World War II in Europe, Skira ceased publication in 1939.Each number of Minotaure included contributions from artists, writers, philosophers, critics, and psychoanalysts, and was meant to be read as a collective work. Contributors included Paul Éluard, Salvador Dalí, Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, and Kurt Veil. Covers included artwork by Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Gaston-Louis Roux, André Derain, Francisco Borés, Joan Miró, Dalí, Henri Matisse, René Magritte, Max Ernst, André Masson, and Diego Rivera.Provenance: Galerie Kornfeld, Bern.

Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a French philosopher, author, dramatist, journalist, world federalist, and political activist. He was the recipient of the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44, the second-youngest recipient in history. His most popular works include The Stranger, The Plague, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Fall, and The Rebel. Camus's essay Le Minotaur presents the reader with an unusual landscape of the Algerian city. The work begins with one of Camus's grand assertions about the state of the world: "There are no more deserts. There are no more islands." As Camus saw it, deserts were necessary for solitude, and solitude was necessary for greatness. The cultural centers of Europe were too old, too dense and enervated, to provide this kind of isolation. Oran, in Camus's estimation, is the city that has walled itself in, a place "devoid of poetry," therefore perfect for isolation. Gift quality! Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. Double Issue, Third serie of MINOTAURE, the legendary magazine of contemporary art conceived of by Albert Skira and a long list of collaborators, including Pablo Picasso, Andre Breton, Salvador Dali. A stunning mix of poetry, images and theoretical diatribes of the Surrealist movement. These issues have a startling series of texts - including a report on Breton's trip to Mexico, where he encountered Diego Rivera (whose work is featured heavily in this issue), and Leon Trotsky, then in the final months of his life. Furthermore, there are many critical editions on the Comte de Lautréamont, specifically by one 'Doctor Pierre Menard' - an encounter between the meta-realistic Borges and the French Surrealists, or perhaps an example of Tlön revealing itself in plain sight? These editions are temporally situated at a profound moment of crux, published before the manifest violence of modernity would express itself. These editions are prized and delicate museum objects. Lower spine missing 1.5cm, and binding is very loose. The images themselves remain remarkably vivid and gorgeous, having lost none of their vivaciousness with age.

Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. First edition, limited issue. Tall octavo. Small chip at the spine crown, very good in printed wrappers and unprinted glassine dust jacket. One of 120 copies reserved for the use of the author of a total edition of 1343 copies. This is copy number 848 on Rives paper. The copies numbered between 801 to 920 were the author's copies. Inscribed by the author: "a Nicole, et Jean Marie/ avec la fidele affection/ de leur vieux camarade/ Albert Camus." ["To Nicole, and Jean Marie/ with the faithful affection/of their old comrade/ Albert Camus."]. The recipients were almost certainly Nicole and Jean-Marie Domenach, French intellectuals and friends of Camus, albeit with some philosophical differences. Jean-Marie was a noted left wing Catholic thinker, and while he and Camus were both vocal in protesting such activities as the French use of torture during the Algerian Civil War, Domenach had considerably more sympathy for the socialist and communist governments of the time, which Camus found repugnant. It is interesting to note the comma in the inscription, as though the inclusion of Jean-Marie in the presentation was an afterthought, or perhaps a necessity of politesse. Long after Camus had died, Jean-Marie Domenach provided a preface to a book of his thinking, *Albert Camus and Christianity. Hope on Trial.* The deluxe editions of this title turn up at auction with some regularity, but we were unable to find any instance of one of the author's copies in the market, and very few copies of this limited edition have ever turned up signed. A rarity, and a notable association copy.
